Me Vs. The Scale
I have had a love-hate relationship with the scale for as long as I can remember. There would be periods where I avoided it at all costs, and then there would be times when I weighed myself multiple times a day obsessively. I allowed it to pronounce judgment on me each and every time. I would be elated to see it move down or crushed to see it move up. I allowed the scale to tell me how "good" or "bad" I had been. Then as I had been trained to do by most of society, I judged my self-worth on whatever number I saw.
The scale does not define your worth.
This was a difficult lesson for me to learn. I had believed for SO LONG that if my weight wasn't within the BMI range, I wasn't good enough. Well, I'm here to tell you that the BMI scale is not the most reliable scale for weight when looking at it on an individual basis. It doesn't take into account all the things that make up your weight like how much muscle mass you have compared to fat mass.
Weight is just one piece of data in your journey.
There are other things that we want to consider on our weight loss journey besides weight. Do I feel stronger? Do I have more energy? Do I have a better mindset around food and my body? How do my labs look? If you don't want your weight to fall in your BMI range, you don't have to! That scale is outdated and may not be realistic for every single person.
So, do I keep track of my weight? Yep! It's one piece of data that allows me to see what direction my habits (food, movement, hydration, etc.) are taking my health. I track it on a couple different data sheets in my 12-week weight loss planner. I also created a yearly view that I've included here as a freebie for my readers.
So, use the scale as a tool if it helps you in your journey, but don't judge yourself. Keep telling yourself that it's just a number. It never defines your worth.
Best Wishes!
